Day 4

The sea takes everything

Ko Lanta, Thailand

Ferry, then a dirt road, then this light. The water is so clear you could count the sand beneath it. I swim until the thoughts stop, and let the rest of the day run out in a hammock. If anyone asks why you travel: this is why. Because at some point the noise stops — and you hear yourself again.

Day 3

Up north the air goes soft

Chiang Mai, Thailand

Night train north. When the doors open, everything is slower: temple bells, dogs on warm asphalt, coffee that tastes of cedar. I rent a bicycle and ride the city wall until my legs burn and my head is empty. At night I sit on a rooftop and look at the mountains as if they had been placed there for this one day.

Day 2

Gold, heat, street food

Bangkok, Thailand

Wat Arun before sunrise. The river is quiet, the city not yet. Later I lose myself in the aisles where coconuts are cracked open before they find their way into the curry. In the evening: a night market that smells of lime, grill smoke and diesel. I write this with sticky fingers and the feeling of not looking at a clock for the first time.

Day 1

Arrival in the chaos

Bangkok, Thailand

The heat sits on the city like a second skin. From the airport into the alleys of Chinatown: scooters, mango dust, neon. I let myself drift, eat the first pad thai of the day on a plastic stool — too sweet, too good — and only notice on the balcony at midnight that I have arrived. Bangkok does not explain itself. It overwhelms you until you stop trying to understand and just walk.
